I had a hard time figuring out how to communicate my thoughts about it properly in this chapter.
Mostly, I agree with you. These major environmental problems should be handled by government regulations. That would be the most effective way, and it should be considered one of the most important jobs of government because nobody else has the power to regulate companies and their impact in the same way.
However, I still think that if people who are in the top 1% or 10% are aware of their impact and want to make a change, I want to encourage them to do so. If we have the ability to change our behavior, we might as well do that, instead of waiting for the government to tell us to do the right things -- because that's probably going to be a long wait...
I also think that if people are aware and involved with their own lifestyle choices, they will more likely be supportive of government stepping in with environmental regulations.
I agree that humans will probably not die out completely... but I don't think mere survival counts as success. A lot of loss and suffering can happen in that process.
Agreed that the reality will be somewhere in between.
