I was thinking of it more from his perspective... if the premise is that he's stressed out because she's sick, it seems to imply that he's concerned about her health, and if that's the case he should want to take good care of her and not be so unhinged.

Realistically, he's wielding his wife's illness as an excuse for his own poor behavior.

And yes, she'd probably be far better off without him.
