A few ideas to save even more money:

I buy big bags of 4 things: brown rice, dried beans, potatoes, and onions. Just make sure you can eat the potatoes and onions before they go bad. The rice and beans in particular are a great calorie:dollar ratio.

Those 4 things, with some oil, salt, hot sauce, and tortillas, can feed me very cheaply for days if need be — or they make a good backbone to add lots of other things to (broccoli, peppers, carrots, mushrooms, etc.)

I rarely eat meat unless it’s free, so I get my protein from beans & rice and tofu instead. Potatoes have some protein too. Cheaper than chicken I’d say.

I think Americans are hyper-focused on protein but most of us actually get plenty of it. There’s no need to be eating meat with every meal. I think a vegan diet is probably the cheapest way to eat, too.

I’ve cut out caffeine, so I don’t buy coffee. I don’t buy sugar because Sriracha has enough sugar in it for me.

I also buy bananas and oranges for snacks.
